The Israel International Organ Festival 2016-2017

The Israel International Organ Festival 2016-2017 will take place this year in Jerusalem and Haifa. A detailed program can be found in our rubric "Forthcoming concerts". In Haifa, all concerts are given on the Shamir organ of the Hecht Museum Auditorium on the Haifa University campus. All concerts are scheduled on Fridays, and begin at 11 a.m. Opening and closing concerts, given by Yuval Rabin, Musical Director of the Festival, will be preceded by a short lecture, at 10.15.

In Jerusalem, the concerts are held in three different locations: the Church of the Dormition Abbey on Mount Zion (Saturdays at 11 a.m.), the Augusta Victoria Elevation Church on Mount Scopus and the Redeemer Church in the Christian Quarter of the Old City(Saturdays at 12.00). The acoustics of these three churches is very convenient for organ concerts, and the organs themselves are very beautiful and very different one from the other:

The Oberlinger organ, at the Dormition, is the largest as it has the biggest number of stops and pipes. This enables the organists to play on it most the organ pieces of the general catalogue, an also to improvise freely if they feel like it. The Schuke organ, at the Redeemer, is smaller and is remarkably fit to play on it German music from the 17th and 18th centuries, including of course Johann Sebastian Bach masterpieces. The Sauer organ of the Augusta Victoria church is a unique German Romantic built one hundred and ten years ago, one of the very few of its type which remained in the world without any modification until today. The sounds of its pipes are remarkably beautiful, and suit particularly well the organ pieces composed in Germany at the end of the 19th century, but lack the diversification needed in organ music from other periods and countries.

The organists and the organisers need to consider the special character of each of these instruments when they decide on the program of their concerts.

The organists

Eleven organists are taking part this year in the Festival, one concert each month from November 2016 until June 2017: two French organists: Frederic Champion, one of the best organ players of our times, and David Cassan, young and virtuose player who just won First Prize for Organ Improvisation at the highest and most-difficult-of-all Chartres International Competition. Another very well-known organist will join them this year: Peter  van Dijk from Holland,  one of the best baroque organ players today and prestigious organ teachers. Several brillant organists will join them this year: Sabin Levi (Bulgaria), Alessandro Bianchi (Italy), Monty Bennett (U.S.A.) and Magdalena Malek (Poland) together with two talented German organists: Roland Voit and Gereon Krahforst.  Gunther Goettsche, organist of the Redeemer Church in the Old City of Jerusalem, a great composer and    improviser, will appear together  with his wife soprano singer Heidrun Goettsche. Two Israeli organists will also take part in this year's Festival: Roman Krasnovsky, the organist and composer from Carmiel in Galilee, who keeps on giving organ recitals all over the world, and Yuval Rabin, the Musical Director of the Festival
